The Bowen Technique

The Bowen Technique (also known as Bowen Therapy) is a gentle, hands-on holistic therapy which treats the whole person to help restore balance in the body. The moves undertaken are specific, and work over the muscles, ligaments, tendons, fascia and nerves. This in turn may help to relieve tension, reduce pain and stiffness, and rebalance the body.

The technique was developed in the 1950’s in Australia, by the late Tom Bowen in his physiotherapy clinic.

How does the Bowen Technique work?

Bowen therapy uses gentle, light and very precise movements to stimulate the fascia and help muscles to re-align and reset. This  treatment is precise and may be highly-effective in relieving pain, improve mobility, aid in relaxation and de-stress. Bowen Therapy is suitable for all age groups, from birth upwards and for all people. Due to its gentle nature, Bowen may be very beneficial in supporting people with life limiting illnesses as well as those with long-term or chronic health conditions, and/or alongside pain management strategies.

During the treatment, the therapist steps away, giving the body time to absorb the series of specific moves undertaken. With these pauses, the stimulated energy flow in the body can often be felt as a warmth or tingling. This time allows the body's autonomic nervous system to respond, and integrate the benefits of Bowen Therapy, as well as allow the client to become more relaxed and focus on the area which has been treated.

A person may often feel significant benefits after just one session. However, a series of sessions (usually 2-3) is often recommended. Your therapist will discuss your tailored therapy plan with you, and advise you on initial treatment recommendations at your consultation appointment. People with chronic conditions may require ongoing, long term, regular sessions.

A session can last anywhere from 30 minutes to an hour. However, your initial consultation usually lasts between  60-90 minutes.

Is Bowen therapy suitable for everyone?

Yes! This gentle, non-invasive treatment is suitable for all, from new born babies to those who are frail as well as the elderly. Bowen therapy has been shown to have positive and beneficial effects on a variety of ailments. The back, neck and shoulders tend to respond particularly well to BowTech Therapy.
